Video Killed the Radio Star

Remember when you could actually see music videos on MTV? It was pretty darn cool seeing a visual representation go hand-in-hand with the latest singles from your favorite bands. Unfortunately, it seems like my generation kind of killed that aspect, and mutated MTV into an awful channel full of terrible “reality” shows.

I mean, there’s Fuse still, but even that is just full with the same old generic radio junk.
BUT, I’m not here to rant about that today. No, in fact I’m here to not only praise the art of the Music Video, but to highlight a few that I find to be the most entertains. Well, at least to me.
First up is “Overlord” from Black Label Society. Not only is this a pretty rockin’ tune (yes, I just said that. Leave me alone), the video is a funny parody of a classic Bruce Lee film. Not to mention, seeing Zakk Wylde shoved into a yellow jumpsuit is entertaining in and of itself.

Next up is one from the always entertaining Bowling For Soup. In addition to having a unique band name, the Bowling for Soup boys have been known to write some pretty up-beat, catchy tunes. Most notably their classic hit “1985” from the album “A Hangover You Don’t Deserve.” While I debated posting the video to that song, I thought I’d go with a different single of theirs which had a video that I found to be a bit funnier. That song being “High School Never Ends.” A statement that really rings true to a lot of us. Enjoy.

There is always that one band that you either really like, or you really don’t. Well, let’s be honest, there’s a few bands like that. The most common one I hear, however, would be New Found Glory. I, personally, like them. But I know some people just can’t get past front-man Jordan Pundik’s nasally vocals. Be that as it may, they have quite a few catchy tunes, and “My Friends Over You” tops the list as my favorite of theirs.

As much as I really, REALLY don’t care for My Chemical Romance, I must admit that I DO enjoy their song “I’m Not Okay (I Promise).” This song not only launched them into the spotlight of the early 2000’s, but it also led many an emo kid to their favorite band. Which, subsequently, broke up recently. I AM a fan, however, of front-man Gerard Way’s comic ventures “The Umbrella Academy” and “Edge of the Spider-Verse” issue #5. What was I saying? Oh yeah, here’s one of the funniest music videos I have ever seen:

Dave Grohl’s powerhouse band Foo Fighters has consistently come out with so many good songs since their debut. Those songs always have some of the most entertaining music videos of any modern band. That being said, I found it quite difficult to just pick one, as this entire article could be devoted to FF videos. In the end, however, I have decided to post the video to my personal favorite song of theirs, “Everlong.”

Last but not least, I submit to you “Bada Bing! Wid a Pipe!” from the fantastic Four Year Strong. In addition to being an awesome song, the video pokes fun at quite a few popular artists such as Snoop Dogg, Missy Elliot, Mariah Carey, and Blind Melon. This is also the song that introduced me to FYS, and subsequently got me hooked on them*.

Well, that’s my list of the most entertaining music videos. I know there are many, many more, but let’s be honest this article would be entirely way too long! Let me know what you think, and tell me some of your favorites!

*- Side note: I will be seeing Four Year Strong at the Troubadour in LA on November 7th, so if you see me be sure to say hi!

Coming Soon to an Internet Near You!

So, I’ve been absent from posting the last few months. I do apologize to ALL of my fans (hi mom) sincerely. I won’t be making a habit of that.

I do, however, have a question for you: Have you ever asked to yourself “I wonder if this guy sounds as opinionated and pretentious as he writes?” If so, I’ve got some exciting news for you!

I’ve been in talks with a few guys about getting a podcast going, and those talks are manifesting themselves into reality. In addition to addressing music (my specialty) I will be expressing my views on comics, which is my other pastime, as well as movies, video games and other nerdy categories.

The final kinks are being worked out, and we will begin recording soon. Be sure to follow me on Twitter (@RedNeckJedi89) to stay up-to-date on our progress, and I have some articles I’m putting the final touches on to post on here as well.

‘Til next time!
